Letter from Pastor Mark This week I was reading “Letters to the Editor” in the Columbus Dispatch Newspaper. (Some of you may not realize that a newspaper is something with print on it that is delivered to your door or available for purchase at many stores. No log in, password or keyboard is required to use this form of communication!) The letter to the editor was a response in an ongoing “war of words” between some Christians and some Atheists. The atheist was explaining how well he was able to exist and do good deeds without the need for God in his life. While I am not one to write in to the editor or post a reply to a blog, I did think about this man’s comments throughout the day. It was especially on my mind because I was trying to comfort the Stanfield family and 22 year old Tyler who was fighting a losing battle to the terrible disease of cancer. As I watched Tyler cling to the hope that only Christ can bring……..as I watched his mother lean upon the Lord of all creation…….as I interceded on their behalf with our Savior and God……..As we all quietly prayed for God’s mercy to end Tyler’s suffering so that He could slip into an eternity with a new pain free body……….I couldn’t help but feel compassion for this atheist who would also one day face death. What would he do as he travelled through the valley of the shadow of death? To whom would he cling as he faced an uncertain and supposedly godless eternity? Would he simply ask the question “is this all there is to life?” Without the existence of our God, not only would we miss abundant life here on this earth but we would have no hope of spending eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am thankful that I have a relationship and daily friendship with a God who loves and knows me yet keeps all of creation under His control. As I enter the year 2012, I pray for a deeper burden and compassion not only for atheists but for all people who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. La carta al editor fue en respuesta a una “guerra de palabras” entre unos Cristianos y unos Ateos. El Ateo explicaba de cómo el puede existir y hacer lo bueno sin la necesidad de tener un Dios en su vida. Aunque yo no soy uno de los que le escriben al editor y responden a un articulo, pensé en este comentario todo el día. Estuvo en mi mente todo el día, porque estaba tratando de consolar la familia Stanfield y a Tyler quien había estado batallando y perdiendo la lucha contra el terrible cáncer. Mientras yo miraba a Tyler sostenerse de la esperanza que solo Cristo da…Mientras miraba a su mamá apoyarse en el Señor de la creación…Mientras yo intercedía por ellos…Mientras en silencio orábamos para que la misericordia de Dios acabara con el sufrimiento de Tyler y que el pudiera entrar a una eternidad con un cuerpo sin dolor…Yo sentí compasión por este ateo que algún día también enfrentaría la muerte. ¿Qué haría al caminar por el valle de la sombras de muerte? ¿Sobre quien se apoyaría al enfrentar una incierta y supuestamente eternidad sin Dios? ¿Preguntaría el simplemente “Esto es todo en la vida?” Sin la existencia de nuestro Dios, no solamente nos perderíamos de la vida abundante aquí en esta tierra, pero también no tendríamos la esperanza de pasar una eternidad con nuestro Salvador y Señor Jesucristo. Yo estoy agradecido de tener una relación con un Dios que me ama, me conoce y tiene toda la creación bajo Su control. Al entrar al año 2012, yo oro por una carga y compasión mas fuerte no solo por los ateos, si no por todos los que no conocen a Jesucristo como Señor y Salvador. Pastor Mark The Christian Counter
